As a person, a mom and a wife; I now have 4 occasions I need to be given gifts fo: my birthday obviously; women’s day( because all the men in my life must appreciate me a bit more on this day), my son’s birthday( I was the one in labour after all) and my or should I say rather ‘our’ wedding anniversary.
We recently celebrated our 4th year wedding anniversary, which does not sound right. It honestly feels like we’ve been together for decades.
We were co-incidentally on holiday already in Durban, and Mr thought since we’re on holiday already he doesn’t have to do anything special 😒. Not being harsh but Durban is not that kind of holiday for me. I’m from KwaZulu Natal, so when I’m there I’m home, running family errands etc, not relaxing on the beach sipping cocktails.
I do a lot of our life’s planning and he assists with execution. I even plan my birthday party every year, regardless of my hints in wanting a surprise party.
Back to the business of the day. The review of the Balmoral hotel, which I ended up booking myself for our anniversary, thanks to ‘booking.com’ that always give me discounted prices. They always turns out cheaper than the hotel’s room rates.
First impression: it’s located on the beach front in Durban.
Beatiful hotel, 4 stars, with amazing views of the beach and the beautiful buzzing beachfront. The hotel is part of a group based in Cape Town; the Rayes hotel group.
We were warmly welcomed with a cool glass of apple juice, that if you’re in Durban is very welcome since the summers get super hot.
Because we’d booked literally 2 hrs before check in and it was peak season we couldn’t get a sea-facing room- all were out. To our pleasant surprise, we are offered a free upgrade to a bigger sea facing room when we get to reception.
So impressed already we get to the room and it looks amazing. Not the 180 degrees sea view like we have at home 😜 But it’ll do.
Simple with a vintage feel to the decor. Comfortable bed with a good pressured shower and a bar fridge at our disposal.
It could’ve done with a bath tub and better cupboards but we’re only here for one night so it doesn’t matter to us.
Service: 8/10. As much as the porters, reception and valet staff were amazing, the clueless waiter at dinner was disappointing. Very sweet but still clueless, didn’t even know what sparkling wine was or how much the buffet, on offer that night, was. Showed serious lack of training of restaurant staff.
Food: 9/10. We went for ala-carte and my mutton curry was beautifully tender with that beloved Durban heat. I even took leftovers home for my mom the next day.
Ambience: 9/10. It looked and felt upmarket but without the usual snobbishness that usually come with this.
Overall experience: 9/10.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the proximity to the ‘night life’ on the beach was pretty good too. We enjoyed clubbing at ‘Joe Cool’.
