Phuza Thursday
It is Thursday again!
So happy the weekend is almost here. Been such a long week, I really deserve my Thursday cocktail today…
Plan for the evening: make my cocktail, grab my book I’m reading, sink into my reading chair and get lost in romantic fiction for an hour. Until it’s dinner time of course.
My flavour combinations are so adventurous tonight. There is a story behind it, as always.
When I trained as a cocktail bartender those many years ago as a student, at ‘Liquidchefs SA’. One of the founders/ directors had a signature cocktail which he made us try replicate. I don’t remember the details of the cocktail anymore, but 2 things I do remember are that. 1. It had pepperdews. 2. It was surprisingly delicious!
So my drink tonight is inspired by that cocktail: Ginger and pepperdews refresher of the week.
What do I need? Other than my book…
Makes 1 drink
Canned pepperdews: 2 pepperdews with the liquid they’re bottled in
Ginger liqueur
Ginger ale
Vodka
Tonic water
Ice cubes
What to do?
This is so simple it’s not even funny. It literally took me 20 seconds to make.
Put the 2 Pepperdews and 2 tbs of the pepperdews’ liquid into a high ball glass. Crush the pepperdews a bit with a spoon.
Then add ice to the brim.
To the ice add all your other liquids: 30ml of vodka, 30ml of ginger liqueur, then top with half ginger ale and half tonic water.
Stir your drink, and top with a straw.
And voila. All done 👏
The tonic water balances the sweetness in the drink coming from both the pepperdews and the ginger ale/liqueur.
The pepperdews add a (very unusual in cocktails) spiciness. Yet it works…
So delicious and refreshing.
